In honor of National Adoption Month, we’re celebrating LGBTQ+ parents who’ve built their families through adoption — parents like Nathan and John, who remind us that love, courage, and authenticity are what truly make a family.
Nathan and John’s story began like many modern love stories do — online. A Plenty of Fish match in 2011 quickly turned into something much deeper, and just two years later, they were married. This past September, they celebrated 13 years together — and more than a decade of family life with their two daughters, Brynn and Emery.
“Parenthood was always part of the plan,” they share. “We both always knew we wanted to be dads. It was an easy conversation between us. We also wanted to be young dads, so we didn’t wait long after getting married to start the process.”
Through a local adoption agency, Nathan and John welcomed Brynn, now 13, and Emery, 11, into their hearts and home. Their decision to adopt felt natural. “There are many children in our area that need families. We wanted to provide a loving home for two children who needed one.”
For them, the best part of parenting is seeing the world through their kids’ eyes — from family adventures to quiet, everyday moments. Of course, raising children also brings challenges. “Each stage of their growth brings new lessons for us as parents,” they say.
Pride is at the heart of their family’s story. The girls love having two dads and never miss a Pride celebration. “We make sure they understand that love makes a family, and that they can always talk openly and be proud of where they come from.”
Their message to other LGBTQ+ people dreaming of parenthood? “Don’t live in fear. Be open, explore your options, and lead with authenticity and love. Your child doesn’t need a perfect parent — they just need you.”
