About Doug
Doug (he/him) and his husband, Brent, became dads to two sons, Sawyer and Shepherd, through open adoption. Passionate about family and adoption, Doug founded the Adopted By You 5K and Fun Run in 2017, served as President of Georgia Gift of Adoption for 8 years, and now works as a Development Officer for BreatheStrong CF nonprofit.
- Children: 2
- Family-building journey: We adopted both boys from birth. We met Sawyer’s birth mother when she was 5 weeks pregnant and built a wonderful relationship with her and she is part of the family. We met Shep’s birth mother when she was 7 months pregnant. We keep in contact with her as well. We were gifted with two positive adoption experiences.
- Parenting advice: We have always told other future parents to take it one step at a time. We never say ‘if you will be parents.’ We say, ‘when you are parents.’ For many, the adoption process is long and complex, so I encourage those pursuing adoption to keep that desire to start your family and know it will happen. Never give up. As a mentor to gay couples looking to adopt, my number one goal is to assure them their journey will end in a forever family.
